From Concept to Completion
Iain Codling creates works for both corporate clients and private collections. Most recently he enjoys combining the look of stainless steel with that of fire, artificial or solar light to create effects in the dark.

About the Artist
Iain Codling was raised on Auckland's North Shore where he completed an apprenticeship in Sheetmetal Engineering specialising in stainless steel. He won his first sculpture competition in 1992 at the Waiheke Art Gallery with a stainless steel lamp. The following year he earned highly commended at the same gallery with an intricate stainless steel dragon. Iain rarely exhibits, preferring instead to design and create individual commissions for private and corporate clients both in New Zealand and overseas. Although he creates the majority of his commissions from conception to installation, Iain also enjoys working in collaboration with other artists. Over the past few years he has designed and created a range of unique furniture. It is very important to him that no two pieces are the same. Iain lives on Waiheke Island with his wife and two children.
Artist's Statement
“I love shapes and I love stainless steel. From conception, to complex calculations, to physically making the pieces, through the monotonous period, the final finishing then standing back. I love the feeling of stainless steel, the shininess, working it and then the finished product. I can see how my work will look before I’ve even started it. I enjoy work that shows the quality of my workmanship, work that evokes the ‘wow factor’. Some people say stainless is a difficult metal to work with, that it’s unforgiving, but I love it. Everything I make is a one-off. I’ve always got concepts in my mind.”
